
Even the rubber foot on the bottom of the dock remains the same. Microsoft continues the tradition of matching the size/shape of the PSU to the dock and continues the same styling with dark-grey plastics and thick rubberized cables. The footprint of the new dock is ~45% larger than the older dock but it is also considerably thinner so the overall volume is about the same. We’re off to an excellent start! The protective sleeves for the dock and PSU are soft paper that almost feels like cloth. The inner packaging is similar to the older models with an upper tray to hold the dock with the PSU and AC/Mains cable secured below. Microsoft’s packaging is nicer this time around changing from a plain rectangular box to a slick rounded box.



The new Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock continues in this tradition offering similar functionality compared to the older Surface Dock 2, but with an extra USB-C port, 2.5Gb/s Ethernet, and of course the inclusion of Thunderbolt which allows cross-compatibility with other laptop brands and daisy-chaining devices like external GPUs and storage arrays. Since then, Microsoft has simplified their docks to be small bricks jam-packed with ports – the last of which launched in May 2020. It, and the Pro3 docking station that followed were among the most mechanically complex and heavy docks in the laptop market. Its been almost 10 years since Microsoft’s first docking station was launched for the Surface Pro 1.
